Can You Tell the Sex of an African Dwarf Frog?

True to their name, African dwarf frogs are diminutive in size, usually measuring between 1 and 1 1/2 inches in length, although they can grow to up to 2 1/2 inches. They vary in color from olive green to brown-green. As they're fully aquatic, they don't need to leave the water and can be kept with certain aquarium fish. If well cared for, these frogs can live up to five years.

Gender Differences

Although African dwarf frogs show very little sexual dimorphism, a small difference between males and females allows you to tell the two apart. Males have post-axillary subdermal glands, one on the back of each of their front legs. These glands are visible externally, appearing as white or off-white dots on the skin. Apart from this gland, males and females look the same, with no variations in size or color being linked to sex.
