Home Treatment for Mange in Hamsters

| Updated September 26, 2017

The occurrence of mange is common in hamsters. Mange is caused by small mites that live in the hair follicles and skin. Mange symptoms include dry, scaly skin and fur loss. Symptoms are usually concentrated around the ears or on the hamster’s back. Home treatments are possible but they will not treat any potential underlying diseases.

Treatments

Keep your hamster in a well-ventilated cage. Closed cages can lead to an increase in mange-related fungal infections.

Add cod liver oil and crushed yeast tablets to your hamster’s food to help restore fur growth. Carrots may also help as they provide Vitamin A. Milk products will add Vitamin D, which is also known to aid fur health.

Soothe itchy skin with aloe vera gel.

Neem oil can be used to treat hamster mange. It is known to have antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Consult a veterinarian prior to use as to high levels may be toxic.

Ivermectin is the drug usually prescribed by veterinarians. It is an oral prescription given over the course of a month.

Warnings

Mange can be a sign of an underlying disease. Kidney disease is a common underlying cause of mange. A veterinarian should be consulted at the first sign of mange.

Mange may be contagious. The infected hamster should be kept away from other pets and humans. Its cage should be disinfected and bedding changed regularly. Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap after handling an infected hamster.
