  • If you suspect that someone electrocuted, shot, poisoned or otherwise killed an animal under suspicious circumstances, report it immediately to a regional FWS Law Enforcement Division Office.

If you encounter a dead dog on the side of the road, it is important to report the incident to local officials in order to prevent a future road-side accident. The specific phone numbers for local officials will vary by location, but the steps you can take to act responsibly and contact the officials are the same across the country.

Stay a safe distance away from the dead dog and do not touch it or attempt to move it yourself.

Call your local police department to report the incident.

Call the law enforcement division of your state Fish and Wildlife Agency. They can determine if someone violated a federal law, necessitating intervention by a Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Law Enforcement Division Office.
