How to Keep Snakes out of a Rabbit Hutch

Your rabbit hutch will appeal to snakes because it provides an easily accessible source of food, water and shelter. Unfortunately, snakes and rabbits are not known for cohabiting gracefully. Snakes, especially poisonous ones, can pose a serious hazard to your pet bunnies. If you keep your rabbits in a hutch outside, then you will have to make sure you can keep snakes out of the hutch.

Step 1

Carefully examine your rabbit hutch and identify all openings which are smaller than 1/4 inch; snakes can fit through any opening larger than 1/4 inch.

Step 2

Cover all the openings in your hutch appropriately. Patch any gaps or holes in the wooden section of your rabbit hutch with wood putty; follow the instructions on any product you purchase to apply it properly. Attach hardware cloth over ventilation openings, windows and wire fencing with openings larger than 1/4 inch.

Step 3

Trim away brush and plants that are growing on the sides of your hutch to eliminate hiding places for snakes; you should also keep the grass mowed short.

Step 4

Clean up all leftover food regularly so that it does not attract snakes or other pests. Do not overfeed your bunny.

Step 5

Apply a non-toxic snake deterrent to the area around your rabbit hutch to help discourage snakes from approaching the area.
