How to Correctly Store a Horse Bridle

Your horse tack, including the bridle, saddle and blankets, is a big investment that requires proper care and storage. There are several types of bridles, such as the western, snaffle, double and endurance. However, regardless of the type of bridle, it is generally sculpted from leather, which makes storage and maintenance pertinent for long life and comfort.

Step 1

Clean your bridle after each use. Horses are “hot” and produce a good deal of sweat. Clean your bridle with a damp sponge. This helps remove the salt. Do not soak the halter with the water -- this causes the leather to dry out and crack.

Step 2

Dry the bridle with a clean towel. Leaving it wet creates an environment for mold.

Step 3

Place the rein buckle on top of the brow band, or crown piece. Wrap the reins around the top of the bridle and form a circle. Wrap the throat latch around it.

Step 4

Lay the bridle flat inside a bridle bag. A fleece-lined bag prevents moisture. Secure it with the snaps or Velcro inside the bag.

Step 5

Hang the bag on a tack rack or hook in an area where there is no humidity or moisture. Hanging your bridle helps it keep the natural form of your horse’s head.
