Delsym is a brand name medication for humans used as a cough suppressant. The generic name for Delsym is dextromethorphan, which also may be prescribed to your dog to relieve his cough.

Warnings

  • Do not administer Delsym to your dog without first consulting your veterinarian for proper dosage instructions. Depending on the cause of your dog's cough, he may need additional treatments such as antibiotics or steroids.

Some causes of coughing in dogs include kennel cough or other respiratory infection, irritation from pulling on his collar, heart failure, foreign material in the airway, heartworms and lung cancer.

Side Effects of Delsym

Delsym may cause drowsiness or upset stomach in your dog. Administer the medication with food to minimize side effects. Irritability, confusion, excitability and nervousness may be a sign of a more serious side effect. If you see these in your dog, contact your veterinarian immediately. Medications that depress the central nervous system may interact with Delsym.
