Diet of the Blue Sheep

The blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur), also called a bharal, lives in the grassy high mountains of the Himalayas, in places such as India and China. It has distinctive horns and looks like a sheep but in certain ways acts like a goat. This striking-looking creature has a coat that changes from slate blue in the summer to slate gray in the winter. The bluish-colored coat, which blends with the habitat's rocks, gives the blue sheep its name. This animal's food choices are no surprise, given its habitat.

Grassy Food

For the blue sheep, the grass is always greener on the other side of the mountain. This animal eats what is at hand in his habitat, which is mostly grass. In the summer he eats alpine grass, and in the winter the menu primarily includes dry grass. Rounding out the diet are moss, leaves, shrubs and lichens. Blue sheep spend much of their time either eating or resting and tend to move around a great deal during many of the daylight hours.
