How to Make an Automatic Dog Feeder

| Updated September 26, 2017

Things You'll Need

  • Pie tin

  • Large plastic jar with lid

  • Sharp scissors or blade

  • Super glue

An automatic dog feeder is a very useful thing for dog owners. It can be a good way to make sure your dog always has food available, and is a good feeding solution for when you are away on short trips. Fortunately, you don't have to purchase an automatic dog feeder because it is fairly easy to make your own.

How to Make an Automatic Dog Feeder

Cut the bottom out of the plastic jar, leaving about 1 inch of room around the edges.

Cut an upside down U on one side of the jar about 2 inches high and 2 inches wide. This will be the opening that the food falls through.

Place glue around the bottom 1-inch rim of the jar and stick it to the pie tin.

Allow to dry completely.

Open the lid of the jar and pour dog food inside.

Tips

  • If you want a large feeder for multiple dogs, you can use a large plastic bin instead of a jar and a small sandbox or child's pool instead of a pie tin.

Warnings

  • Even with automatic feeders, it is important to monitor your dog's food intake. Make sure they are not overeating. Keep fresh food in your dog's feeder so that it does not become stale or promote bacteria growth.
