What Is Metacam?

By Jennifer Eblin | Updated September 26, 2017

People tend to forget that pets feel pain just as seriously as humans do. The pain results from serious medical conditions as well as injuries. Luckily, there are medications like Metacam, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc., to help alleviate the pain the animal experiences.

Function

Metacam is a type of pain-relieving medication used for pets and, in particular, dogs.

Types

Metacam comes in 2 different types: liquid or oral. The oral form is a liquid taken by the dog, while the liquid form is injected into the animal.

Significance

Metacam is the only type of oral pain medication for dogs. The other products on the market are only available in the injection form.

Size

Metacam works on all sizes of needles and for all sizes of dogs. It can be used on smaller dogs that weigh less than 10 lbs. and in dogs that weigh more than 100 pounds.

Safety

The manufacturer of Metacam did several studies and found that the medication is safe to use on dogs, even for long-term treatment. Dogs with serious medical conditions can use the drug for pain reduction.
